He follows a simple ‘plus-one’ rule, which means only packing the absolute essentials, and a back-up.

The travel guru also suggested taking items which are easy to clean.

It’s crucial not to accommodate for ‘what if’ scenarios, and brutally cut out all the extras, according to Tom.

Yolanda Edwards, founder of the travel magazine Yolo Journal added: “You’re going to be the one who, when you get home, you’re like, ‘I didn’t wear eight of those things, but I swore I needed them’.

“Try and remember all of those packing mistakes and try not to repeat them.”

This includes scaling back on toiletries and only bringing the bare minimum.

It can also be space-saving to use smaller travel sized containers rather than the original bottles.

And, many essentials can be bought while you’re away at local shops, or even the airport.

Meanwhile, United Airlines pilot, Carole Hopson, advised checking out what laundry facilities will be available at your destination.

If you can wash your clothes while you’re there, don’t pack as many.

Even if the hotel doesn’t have a cleaning service, it may be worthwhile checking out nearby laundromats, or packing some hand wash detergent.

Plus, flight attendant Ashlee Loree recommended “versatility” over lots of choice.

Lululemon pants are very comfortable and versatile for business and pleasure,” she suggested.

How you fold your clothes also comes into play while trying to save space.

Many opt for the roll method, while others argue the traditional flat pack works best.

Frequent flyer Tom makes use of dry-cleaner hangers and plastic covers to pack certain items, while rolling the rest for more space.

And, travel mag founder Yolanda goes for a mix of both for optimum results.

“I like to roll all the things that can handle rolling, and then I fold my nicer things I don’t want to have to iron and put that on top,” she told Stuff.

Meanwhile, Loree claims it depends on who is travelling.

“If it’s easier for you to fold and that takes up less space, do what works for you,” she said.

Compression bags can also be used to squeeze bundles of clothes down in size.

“My secret weapons are easy-to-use compression bags,” continued Loree, who said they ” can shrink the load to about half its original size”.

The flight attendant also recommended wearing your biggest and heaviest items of clothing on the plane.

This was echoed by Yolanda who said she puts on her “heaviest shoe” for the journey.

Another handy tip from the travel experts was to keep any valuable essentials on your person, or in your handbag instead.

This comes as other gurus have shared their golden travel tips.
